Whoever was responsible for ordering the weather for the final round of the 54 Hole Women’s Club Championships is to be congratulated. An early and quite heavy shower of rain threatened the 8.00am start but miraculously it cleared as quickly as it started to the relief of all. The prospect of playing in the rain was  totally unexciting and with much relief the girls settled in  to the work at hand. Thankfully that was the end of the wet and while it remained cloudy and somewhat humid for the duration of the competition  the sun came out to brighten up the day.

The final round is always tough for the front runners who are under the pump to produce their best golf to achieve the desired outcome. In Division 1 Linda Weatherill was the leading contender for the Championship by six shots from Jill Levi so the pressure was on both girls at the outset. Unfortunately Linda was unable to maintain her form of the of the first two rounds particularly on the greens where her putting caused much angst. With the putts refusing to drop her score of 103 off the stick killed her chances especially as Jill put in a steady effort to clock up 95 off the stick and steal the Championship by a close two strokes.

In the Division 1 scratch competition today it was neck and neck between playing partners Gloria Davis and Sue Hunter for the honours. With both managing a creditable 94 off the stick the final decision went down to a count back. While both players scored 48 on the back nine, Gloria prevailed with a near hole in one on the 16th but a birdie was all that was required to give her the edge. In the nett competition the tables were turned with Sue having the advantage in handicap to pip Gloria this time with a neat 67 to 69 respectively.

It was equally as exciting in the Division 2 Championship competition. Patricia Austin took to the course leading the scratch score by one shot ahead of Val Wilson and two ahead of Marj Burns. It was “anyone’s” chance to win depending on who could hold the nerves and the concentration over the ensuing 18 holes. It was Patricia’s day when she held it all together to come in with a steady 108 off the stick to take out the Championship ahead of Val who scored 110. Patricia contributed her good round to a stronger putting performance which has recently been alluding her. This result for Patricia also  enabled her to claimed the scratch in the daily competition.

The nett competition in Division 2 was dominated by Kirsten Themsen who stole the honours with a nett 76 from a strong contender in Donna Hewat. Kirsten has put in a solid performance over the three rounds of the Championships and seems to have found her straps after a long break due to knee surgery.

Well done everyone for participating and demonstrating good sporstmanship throughout.
