The April Monthly Medal was played on what looked like a very inviting course with the possibility of an easy game. Quite the reverse was found for most of the 24 members who found it very tough going in all respects. On this occasion it was a necessity that the ball found the fairway and not the rough as it was wet and long for most of the morning. It was expected that the pace of the greens would have been slow because of the early damp conditions. However, they proved to be lightning fast and the pin positions were very unforgiving.

As the temperature went north so did the counting of strokes and putts and a nett score in the mid seventies was a reasonable one today.

In Division 1, Sue Beazley cleaned up with a clear margin to produce the best nett score of the day of 72 while a steady Linda Trusler claimed the runner’s up spot with a creditable 76 nett.

Val Wilson came in strongly in Division 2 to snatch the top position with 78 nett and following closely on her heels was Patricia Austin with 80 nett.

Division 3 saw some close results and taking out the honours for the win was Ellen Ryan with 75. Kirsten Themsen showed that she is becoming a very consistent performer and managed to be in the winners circle again this week. Kirsten was a close second with a 76 nett.

Women’s Golf Illawarra Trophy

In conjunction with the Monthly Medal there was a Women’s Golf Illawarra Trophy competition. This is an open nett event run firstly at club level. The winners at club level are then eligible to play for the big trophy against the winners from other clubs at the WGI Tournament at Wollongong Golf Club in October. The number of eligible candidates is dependant on the number of entrants and with our 24 entrants, we are able to have three winners.

The three best nett winners are Sue Beazley (72), Ellen Ryan (75) and Kirsten Themsen (76) on a count back.
