The sky was a brilliant azure blue, the temperature was like a summer’s day, the birds were happily twittering amongst the trees but it turned out to be a very tough day on the course for the 31 ladies playing a stroke event for the May Monthly Medal on a very long and arduous composite wet weather course.
It certainly looks easy enough with the lush, green of the fairways which had been mown to perfection and the bonus was that the bunkers were all GUR. How hard can it be? Very hard it seems according not only to the players but also to the numbers on the returned score cards. It is a very physically and mentally exhausting exercise to play six par five holes in a round when there is usually only three. However, the girls battled on with determination set on their faces and all finished the round and stumbled into the club house feeling totally traumatised.
Much to her surprise, Jenny Brown was the star of the day in being the only player to record a nett score under 80. Jenny took out the Division 1 honours with a 105/78 result and her playing partner, Angela Boadle was hot on her heels to claim the runners up spot with 102/80.
In Division 2 a steady Val Wilson put in a stoic performance to nudge in to the winner’s position with 111/80. Sandra Rigney is finding her form again after hip surgery and she clocked in as runner up in Division 2 with 118/82.
Jean Mitzimberg is showing her potential as a fine player after graduating to competition golf from the “Jill’s Friday Girls”. Jean put in a solid performance to convincingly hold her own in Division 3, taking out the Medal by scoring 127/80. Betty Tucker was runner up with 123/84.
