Jack Frost paid a visit with vengeance at the course this morning for the annual Patron’s Day. Bravely, although with a little hesitancy, the 34 participants headed off for their assigned tees for a shotgun start at 8.30 looking like skiers in a snow storm rather than golfers. While the morning was crystal clear it was extremely cold and a very lazy breeze off the snow fields from afar made it difficult to get the swing going. On shady parts of the course a little evidence of Jack’s work could still be seen.

Seeking the sunny spots along the way was the order of the morning but then within a couple of hours the warmth of the sun began to penetrate the cool air, gradually the outer layers were shed and all were basking in the sun like a group of very happy cats.

The Better Ball format is a non pressure game for most as a partner can hopefully be relied upon to come good on the occasion of ‘having a bad hole”. The second and third places today were very competitive and third place was decided on a countback three times over. However the score of the day was an extremely decisive win.

The victorious pair were Robyn Moore and rookie Sharyn Balzer who combined experience and handicap to return an outstanding card of 50 points to claim the honours in fine style. Joyce Wallace and Betty Tucker snuck into the second spot  with a narrow win with 41 points over Jill Levi and Lyn Ashton who snatched the third place with 40 points on a countback. As she thought it poor form to win her own donated contribution, Jill very generously gave her winnings for the “Bradman’s Prize” which was won by Sandra Rigney and Anne Newton.

The generous sponsorship provided by Michele and Jill was much appreciated.

President, Angela made a presentation in honour of Michele Carey who is sadly leaving the fold of playing members. Michele has been a member of the club over the past 65 years and during that time has had an outstanding golfing career and has made a valuable contribution to Women’s Golf as a Committee member, Vice Captain and Captain of Women’s Golf Nowra. Her input over the years has been much appreciated. We will miss seeing her tootle around the course but hope to see her visit and catch up from time to time.
