The golfers exuded high spirits and were bubbling with enthusiasm as they arrived at the course to embark upon another exhilarating year of competition. The weather was perfect and the course absolutely stunning which added to the excitement. For those who hadn’t played since the end of the 2018 season, prior to hit off was a time to ponder on whether the break had been good for their technique or perhaps they would struggle to score on the first day back.

As the morning progressed and the temperature rose, a few players succumbed and retired to the clubhouse to await the return of their playing partners. However, the majority managed to complete the round without suffering in distress.

It appears that the course was the winner today. The summer showers that have prevailed over the past few weeks have certainly kept the grass growing, the run on the course nearly non-existent and the rough particularly difficult to negotiate. These conditions resulted in quite average scores overall.

In the Single Stableford event that ensued Gloria Davis took out the Division 1 honours with the best score of the day at 34 points, but Des Thornett was close on her heals with a creditable 32 points. Division 2 winner was Trish Austin on 31 points and Angela Boadle managed to snap at Trish’s heals with a 30 point result. Sandra Rigney and Betty Tucker battled it out to score 28 points each with Sandra prevailing on a countback.
