A touch of summer prevailed for the annual Maureen Knaggs Super 6 Knockout competition today. The warmer conditions were tempered by a lazy southerly breeze and a modicum of cloud cover which enabled the 22 participants to finish the round without too much heat stress.

While the conditions weren’t too warm, the competition was hot as the 16 qualifiers negotiated their way around the stableford matchplay format. After the first six holes the field was reduced by half to eight players who then played off over the next six holes in the hope of advancing to the semi final of four players. In the semi final on holes 13 to 18, Val Wilson played commanding golf to overpower a strong Linda Trusler 3/2 while the other semi final match between Angela Boadle and Margaret Ford was a cliff hanger when it ended in a squared result. This meant a two shot shoot out from the 100 metre mark for the nearest to the pin. Angela played a cagey, safe shot to to the right of the green and Margaret was unlucky to land in the bunker but was not able get onto the green from there. Angela produced the goods to claim the victory.

This set up a final match between Val Wilson and Angela Boadle and they set off down the first fairway for a three hole challenge to decide the winner. It was shot for shot to the green but Val”s was too strong with her second putt. Angela was able to capitalise and gained the advantage in landing her second putt to win the hole.

Once again it was “neck and neck” up the fairway but Val was unlucky to to land her third shot in the GUR bunker at the back of the green. Angela was already on the green so was in an enviable position at this stage. While Val made a valiant effort to reach the green with the next shot it was going to be a long putt to victory. Angela deservedly won the hole and the match 2 up.

In the Matchplay Stableford Plate event contested by those who did not qualify or who were knocked out there was some strong scoring with Linda Trusler the final winner with a creditable 37 points and Patricia Austin was the worthy runner up on a count back with 34 points. The rest of the field were awarded a ball for their efforts.
