Many a hard fought battle was played today in the annual Captain versus President Matchplay event. The game is played as a 2 Ball Better Ball in stableford format with two pairs pitting their golf prowess against each other. The better score in stableford points of each pair is matched against the better score of the opposing pair on each hole.

Which ever pair has the higher points wins the hole, the other pair loses the hole or if the scores are equal, the hole is squared. Each match is decided when one team has won more holes than they can be beaten by.

Captain, Sue Hunter and her able Vice Captain Jill Levi took to the course with confidence in their skills and matchplay experience against President Angela Boadle and Vice President Trish Austin who have both put in strong performances recently. It was hole for hole until the closing part of the game with Sue and Jill gaining the advantage with a win of 3 up with 2 holes to play.

The temperature on the course climbed steadily as the morning ticked by but with the eyes on the prize everyone pushed on, determined to gain the advantage to take the hole. The beautiful breeze off the river, and the shade of the large, majestic trees on the course were keenly sought.

A few of the matches were played to the death, neither team willing give in to the heat nor concede defeat to their opponent. However, there is always a point in a matchplay situation where the writing is on the wall and all is lost.

Despite a valiant and determined effort the Captain’s team were soundly defeated – one could say “flogged” – by the President’s side with a resounding 5 matches to 1 victory and two squared matches. Well done to the President’s side – definitely the better team today.
